Trees 4 Lebanon

Vision

Worldwide, deforestation is the second leading cause of increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide, therefore contributing to climate change and global warming
Between 1990 and 2000, Lebanon was able to gain an average of 1,000 hectares of forest per year, leading to a reforestation rate of 0.83% per annum
However between 2000 and 2005, these modest efforts decreased to 0.76% per annum.

Additionally, other woodlands (non-forest wooded areas) have shown a decrease of 6000 hectares between the years 2000-2005 (data from the FAO http://www.fao.org/forestry/18308/en/lbn/ and Montgabay http://rainforests.mongabay.com/deforestation/2000/Lebanon.htm).

T4L Project & Rotary Objectives

Putting a plan for planting trees in Lebanon coincides with more than one of the objectives of Rotary International. To name a few:

Caring for the Environment
Community Services
Helping to improve quality of life in the community
Promoting Rotary International services in general and Rotary Club Baabda services in particular, thus creating a more comprehensive idea about Rotary, thus facilitating the recruitment of new members.

T4L Project Objectives

The Rotary club of Baabda initiated this project in the year 2008-2009 and goes on with its implementation year after year, based on the following objectives:

To procure, distribute plant, irrigate and maintain one million trees over a period of 10 years in Lebanon.
This is a mega project since the cost of procuring, planting, irrigating and maintaining is guesstimated at the price of approx. $ 6  per tree, hence the total cost of the project is guesstimated at 6  million dollars.
For this reason, we are starting with a reduced objective and we scale it up gradually: 15 000 trees for year 1 and 155 000 trees for year 10.

Strategic Directions

We consulted with experts in order to determine the need in terms of types of trees and areas in which trees need to be planted while respecting biodiversity.
We started by planting trees gradually, looking for different ways and means to procure the required type of trees to plant, irrigates and maintains the trees properly, while keeping our cost to minimum and achieving yearly targets.
We worked as a team stimulating other institutions and organizations to support this project in its different phases (planning, procurement, plantation, irrigation and maintenance).
We got the support of the Media for this project should always be kept in mind in order to get the required awareness
Fundraising should was considered as a main issue throughout the execution of this project.
